Nonviolent Conflict Intervention Workshops

Nonviolent Conflict Intervention (NCI) workshops are now being offered in selected cities. These workshops provide techniques that are used successfully by individuals in their daily lives, by local peace teams, and by our Nonviolent Peaceforce International Civilian Peacekeepers.

Nonviolent Conflict Intervention (NCI) differs from other nonviolence training by focusing on nonpartisan, active, third party intervention.  Most nonviolence courses teach what to do when you are yourself in conflict with another person - NCI training introduces and builds upon such skills while showing how you might intervene to
de-escalate conflict between two (or more) other people or parties. A Nonviolent Conflict Intervention Workshop invites you to explore how nonviolent methods can lessen or prevent conflict—in your daily life, in your community, and around the world.

Two different workshops are being offered: One-Day and Training for Facilitators.

The one-day workshop is filled with hands-on exercises and role plays that will introduce you to basic communication and conflict resolution methods.  You will learn how you can use these skills when you come across conflict in your daily life. Your facilitators are dedicated local volunteers who are using a curriculum developed by NP North America. Nonviolent Conflict Intervention Workshops are open to everyone.

The Training for Facilitators course, for about 20 people, is 2.5 days starting at 5 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday. To become an NP volunteer facilitator, you should enjoy working with people in a team, have some experience in teaching, leading, or training, and have the confidence to present in front of a group.  We welcome persons who can generate conversation among participants and connect ideas, but respectfully and warmly redirect the group, if necessary, to keep a course on track.

We are exploring alternative ways to orient experienced trainers or smaller groups to the curriculum to enable volunteer facilitators to offer this workshop in more places. Also, where there are already-trained facilitators leading workshops (Boston, SF Bay Area, Southern California, Philadelphia, Seattle), one can assist them and gradually take on more facilitation responsibilities. Contact Joan Bernstein if either of these options interests you.

Those who participate in the full weekend will receive ongoing mentoring from volunteer lead-trainers, and will be expected to lead, with a co-facilitator at least 4 one-day workshops.  These workshops are suited for civic groups, faith groups, colleges, and the general public.
